Odesa: enjoy

It is so easy to fall in love with Odesa, and it’s impossible to stop loving it. Whenever you come to this charming city, there is always a place you have never visited before. It is worth to mention that you can enjoy the sea any time of year. We will tell you now about the most famous and most unknown sights in Odesa.

1. Primorsky Boulevard

This famous architectural complex is one of the main streets in Odessa, along with Deribasivska street. It is a favorite place for promenades from where you can enjoy all-around-view of the Sea Port. The boulevard starts from the building of City Duma (City Hall) and ends with the colonnade of Vorontsov Palace, which is also interesting to visit. In the middle of the boulevard stands famous Monument to Duke de Richelieu, here also begin Potemkin Stairs. There is no guest of the city, who does not take photo, standing here.

2. Odesa City Garden

It is a place of gathering for artists; the garden is often called an open-air museum. Odessa artists present their paintings here. There is also number of beautiful fountains here, one of which is the Fountain of Perfume, which sprays attractive scents selected by a French perfumer. In the garden you can see a lot of modern and ancient monuments and sculptures, which became the symbols of the city. The green island of the City Garden is located in the very centre of Odesa, next to Deribasivska street.

3. Odesa catacombs

This is the most undiscovered place in Odesa and probably in Ukraine. Odesa catacombs are the longest in the world, with the length of nearly 3,000 km and depth up to 100 m. Major part of underground labyrinths are abandoned rock quarries with multiple exits and entrances. In September 2017 new Kantakuzen’s Catacomb Museum was opened. The object consists of 120 galleries in the very centre of Odesa, on Bunina street. In 6 museum rooms you will find out about catacombs history, mining and furnaces, brick manufacture and Vorontsov manor.

4. Odesa Cinema Museum

Odesa is known as the centre of the cinematography and Odessa International Film Festival, gathering the filmmakers and movie enthusiasts every summer. Odesa Cinema Museum gives you an opportunity to learn more about history of the cinematography. It contains a lot of interesting exhibits like the first camera, collection of cameras of Oleksandr Dovzhenko, the coat and the hat which once belonged to Vladimir Vysotsky, rare books, scene and costume designs, attributes and facts of work of prominent film directors, actors and producers.

5. The Wall House or the House of Witch

Amazing mystical house is situated on Vynogradna street. This house causes genuine bewilderment of unprepared passerby. The fact is that the cost savings in materials during construction of this house in 19 century lead to the building being built in the form of triangle. If you look at the house under particular angle you will not see the wall. An illusion of the house with façade wall only is created. Because of this mystification the building is also called The House of Witch. At present time the façade of the Wall House was renovated with all the old details like wrought iron stairs, artistic moldings preserved. Tourists can rent an apartment in this house to feel the atmosphere of this unusual place.

6. Istanbul Park

Beautification of Istanbul Landscape Park, which was presented to Odesa by Istanbul authorities, was completed in May 2017. Now it is the best place for promenades. It is located to the right from Potemkin Stairs. Creative stone fountain, numerous paths and green lawns, children’s and sports playgrounds, alcoves and even drinking fountains are situated all around the parkland.
The terrain of the park, its slopes and terraces allowed accommodating a lot of entertainment and recreation areas. A very pleasant bonus in a scorching day is the opportunity to just sit on the lawn and admire the beauty of nature.

7. Odesa Brandy Museum

This is the only museum of a kind in Ukraine. It was opened only 4 years ago, but it already became one of the most popular sightseeing and creative location in the city. The museum hosts film exhibitions, literature presentations, exhibitions of painting and photos, concerts and auctions, and the list is not exhaustive. But the most important thing is an excursion around five rooms dedicated to the production of brandy. Visitors of the museum are offered to taste vintage and ordinary brandy. The interior of the museum is stylish and cozy, everything here is meant for pleasure and relaxation.
